Family of Origin Issues

What is family of origin and its accompanying issues? The family is the first social group a person belongs to, and creates the environment responsible for a child’s development. Simply put, if a child’s family has troubles, or does not nurture the innate nature of that child, he/she may be at risk of addiction as an adult.

Traumatic events, such as a bitter divorce, abuse, death of a parent or sibling will disrupt the maturation process. There are less extreme interruptions of a child’s development which can cause problems. If a child is forced to conform to an adult’s expectations that are not true to the child’s nature, a sense of failure and feelings of shame are sure to set up roadblocks to a gratifying adulthood. Without confidence and a belief in his/her self worth, a false substitute can be found in a bottle, in the medicine cabinet or on the street.

“Faith is taking the first step even when you don’t see the whole staircase.” Martin Luther King, Jr.
